"The word "medieval" is often used in a negative way when talking about contemporary issues; Why the Middle Ages Matter refreshes our thinking about this historical era, and our own, by looking at some pressing concerns from today's world, asking how these issues were really handled in the medieval period, and showing why the past matters now. The contributors here cover topics such as torture, animal rights, marriage, sexuality, imprisonment, refugees, poverty and end of life care. They shed light on relations between Christians and Muslims and on political leadership. This collection challenges many negative stereotypes of medieval people, revealing a world from which, for instance, much could be learned about looking after the spiritual needs of the dying, and about integrating prisoners into the wider community with the emphasis on reconciliation between victim and criminal. It represents a new level of engagement with issues of social justice by medievalists and provides a highly engaging way into studying the middle ages for students"--

We lopen tegen grenzen aan die er ons toe dwingen de toekomstdimensie bewuster in ons denken te integreren. Ethiek, het denken over goed en kwaad, dient even ver te reiken als de ecologische schokgolf die door ons handelen wordt veroorzaakt. Al wordt er nog veel te weinig naar gehandeld, het is een algemeen gedeelde overtuiging dat het een groot onrecht zou zijn om aan toekomstige mensen een leeggeplunderde planeet na te laten. In dit boek wordt gepoogd, aan deze intuïtie als inspirerende beginsel voor een rechtvaardige nader vorm te geven. Aan de order is dus een ethische reflectie die toekomstige, nog niet geboren mensen binnen de kring van maraal en rechtsorde betrekt. Aan zo'n toekomstethiek – de term is van Hans Jonas, wiens Das Prinzip Verantwortung in dit boek als leidraad fungeert – worden eerst enkele algemene beschouwingen gewijd. Trachten we de inhoud van die ethiek nader te bepalen, dan staat gerechtigheid als beginsel centraal. Toekomstige generaties delen met ons, de nu levenden, een natuurlijke omgeving waarvan de hulpbronnen eindig zijn. Grootschalig milieubederf tast hun levenskansen aan. Ook in de tijdsdimensie heeft dus de strijd voor rechtvaardige verhoudingen een taak. Daar ligt dan een tijdeloos perspectief aan ten grondslag: het tijdsverschil tussen 'nu' en 'straks' achten wij uit moreel oogpunt irrelevant. Maar tegelijk staan we in het heden, in de tijd, en kost het ons moeite om betrokkenheid met het welzijn van nog niet geboren en dus anonieme individuen op te brengen. Met dit meer subjectieve maar uit praktisch oogpunt zeer relevant aspect dient een reële toekomstethiek zich ook te bemoeien. Er is in ruimte èn tijd zoiets als morele afstand. kan toekomstethiek zich hiertegen op een belang beroepen dat wij er allen in hebben om in een open tijdshorizon voor samenleving en cultuur te kunnen vertrouwen?
